Architecture professor's bridge design earns German steel construction award - Florida International University

Cycle-Friendly Pedestrian Bridge Wins Steel Construction Award

A cycle-friendly pedestrian bridge designed by architecture professor Thomas Spiegelhalter has been recognized with the steel construction category of the 2026 Deutscher Metallbaupreis (Germany’s metal construction award). The bridge, constructed over the Kleine Emscher river in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany by Winterhalter Stahlbau, was praised for its innovative blend of manufacturing and steel construction.

Award-Winning Design and Collaboration

“This is my eighth award-winning bridge design, but the first where I integrated advanced evolutionary growth algorithms, AI-assisted generative design, and extensive structural topological optimization, finite element analysis, and cloud-based robotic metal additive G-coding and manufacturing,” said Spiegelhalter. “The collaboration among engineers, scientists, manufacturers, and skilled craftspeople transformed computational research into a fully realized structure.”

Unique Construction Features

The 50-meter bridge combines standard hollow steel sections with six custom stainless-steel connections, called nodes, manufactured using robotic 3D printing with laser metal deposition. This hybrid construction system connects the bridge’s larger steel members.

Spiegelhalter’s design utilized AI-assisted generative design tools to create the bridge’s asymmetric framework and optimize the connections’ geometry. The project brought these digital forms to life through collaboration between architects, engineers, and fabricators.

Environmental and Resilient Design

The bridge is part of the Green Window to the Rhine project, transforming a formerly inaccessible industrial site into a public park. The project aligns with broader environmental recovery efforts, with the river now free of sewage and restored. Spiegelhalter’s design considered wind and water loads, and included surveys of local plants and wildlife to minimize ecological disruption during construction.

Impact on Students and Mentorship

Spiegelhalter is a professor at FIU in the Department of Architecture, and his influence extends to his students. Juan Garcia '25, a graduate of the School of Architecture and former teaching assistant for Spiegelhalter’s course, now runs his own firm. Garcia credited Spiegelhalter with sparking his wonder for architecture and shaping his future.

Engineers Matthias Pfeifer and Bernd Sum contributed to the project, and testing at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology supported the development of the connections.

Winterhalter Stahlbau assembled and completed the bridge in just two days, including welding, painting, and installing the deck. Three glass sections in the walkway will offer visitors a glimpse into the structure’s printed connections.
