Arlington County Sues to Stop Construction of Trump's Arch

Arlington County has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, seeking to halt construction of President Donald Trump's Memorial Circle arch. The suit alleges that the National Park Service (NPS) violated federal law by skipping essential environmental impact assessments and failing to consider reasonable alternatives to what critics deem a "vanity project."

A Legal Challenge Arises

"The president is not allowed to bypass legal review requirements... just because he wants to move quickly on his own whims," stated Skye Perryman, CEO of Democracy Forward, in a press release.

This latest lawsuit builds on prior legal actions against Trump's D.C. renovation projects, many facing litigation for various reasons. The proposed 250-foot arch is one such project, intended to reshape Washington, D.C., in Trump's image.

Alleged NPS Missteps

According to the suit, the NPS:

  • Failed to conduct a thorough environmental impact review as mandated by the National Environmental Policy Act.
  • Inadequately assessed potential historic, cultural, and aesthetic impacts of the arch.
  • Overlooked or dismissed identified harms while ignoring other significant project implications.

Impact on Arlington County

Arlington County further argues that the construction will:

  • Increase congestion on thoroughfares crucial for emergency services to Reagan National Airport and Arlington National Cemetery.
  • Enhance noise and air pollution levels.
  • Impair historic properties, including Arlington National Cemetery.

Trump recently announced plans to utilize the arch as a "top-grade Military Complex" for drones, snipers, and ammunition storage, further escalating concerns about safety risks near commuters and tourists.

A Community's Stand

Arlington County Board Chair Matt de Ferranti expressed their decision to file the lawsuit:

We have diligently and in good faith engaged with the federal government... but it is clear that our community has the most to lose from this egregious and unlawful proposed project.
