BEND, Ore. (KATU) —
A man was found dead after driving an electric scooter into a construction zone in Bend on Thursday.
According to Bend Police, officers responded to a welfare check between NE Division Street and Third Street on Oct. 29. A passerby had seen a man lying on the road around 10:45 p.m. and called police.
The area is currently closed due to North Unit Irrigation District construction.
When police arrived, they found 40-year-old Tommy Roberts Banks inside the construction zone. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bend Police determined Banks was riding an electric scooter northbound through the closed section of NE Division Street. Investigators believe Banks struck a large rebar grid in the roadway and crashed. He was not wearing a helmet.
