BWXT Begins Construction on New Expansion in Jonesborough

BWXT Technologies in Jonesborough has started construction on its 325,000-square-foot facility designed to process high-purity depleted uranium. In September, the Washington County Planning Commission approved the company’s site plans, enabling them to begin the three-phase construction process.

Project Phases:

  • Phase One: The site’s pilot plant, ongoing for several years, is set to conclude next spring.
  • Phase Two: Construction of the initial production line, located on the eastern side of a creek, is underway.
  • Phase Three: The large production facility for full-scale operations is under construction on the site’s western side, behind the creek.

"We’ve done site preparation work there," said Jeff Messaros, president and general manager of BWXT’s Tennessee Ordinance, regarding the final phase. “There are a lot of state, federal, local permits to ensure that the construction is safe and in compliance.”

Construction has been underway for over a year to ensure adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
