Campus construction update: What to expect this winter and beyond - Boise State University

Boise State’s Campus Improvements in Progress

Boise State’s Campus Operations is making significant strides on four major campus improvement projects.

Steam Tunnel Replacement:

Work on the steam tunnel replacement is progressing, with a seasonal pause scheduled for the upcoming weeks. All fencing in the Quad will be removed as this phase nears completion. Crews are finishing up by placing new sod, pouring sidewalks, and preparing the area for winter, ensuring restored walking routes across campus.

The third and final phase will begin in spring 2027, aiming for completion by November 2027. This phase will address the remaining sections of tunnel not yet replaced, so expect a different layout when fencing returns next spring.

This once-in-a-generation investment in campus piping is appreciated by the entire Boise State community as they navigate any temporary disruptions.

Science Research Building:

Preparations for the new Science Research Building at the corner of Euclid, Belmont, and Grant avenues are set to begin in late December. This includes geotechnical testing, utility locates, and site staging, marking the initial visible steps towards the project's groundbreaking in Spring 2027.

What to expect:

  • Survey crews, soil borings, and utility verification work
  • Fencing and equipment staging
  • Temporary lane and walkway shifts near the site (signage will mark detours)
  • Some noise and truck traffic during work hours

Education Building Elevator and HVAC Upgrades:

Boise State is investing in the Education Building with crucial infrastructure projects:

  • Elevator restoration work will continue until May 2027, with one elevator offline at a time to minimize disruptions.

  • Comprehensive HVAC upgrade preparations begin in late spring through summer 2027. In January and February 2027, contractors will replace thermostats and control systems, potentially restricting airflow and requiring temporary classroom and office reassignments.

Leatherman Peak Building Modifications:

The Leatherman Peak Building in south campus, home to Facilities Operations and Maintenance, will undergo interior improvements to expand office space, starting in early December and concluding by Fall 2027.

Construction activity, fencing, and temporary sidewalk and road restrictions along Belmont between Euclid and Manitou Avenues are expected.
