Judge Issues Temporary Restraining Order on Late-Night Construction at Chinatown Jail Site
The ruling sets back New York City's plan to build jails in four boroughs to replace Rikers Island. Chinatown residents and advocates had sued over permits allowing construction from 6 a.m. to midnight on weekdays, arguing it disrupted sleep.
“Today a New York County Supreme Court judge validated what Chinatown has been saying for a long time: the City's plans for years of nighttime drilling and overnight construction are dangerous to the surrounding community,” said Vic Lee, founder and CEO of Welcome to Chinatown.
The city has not commented on the ruling and the two sides are due back in court on December 1.
