Commons at Campus Center Advances Toward Construction

Detailed designs for new gathering spaces at the heart of campus have been approved, while interim improvements and activities are creating more opportunities for students to connect now.

Key Project Elements:

  • The Commons Great Room: Will include spaces for both group meetings and individual seating, with reservable and drop-in spaces for clubs and other groups on the second floor. (LBRE/LMN Architects)
  • Renovated Post Office Building: Boasts a new bookstore with academic and general books, along with a small café for book talks and informal gatherings. (LBRE/LMN Architects)
  • Trellis Gathering Space: Provides a covered area for large gatherings at the south end of White Plaza. (LBRE/LMN Architects)

In Brief:

Detailed designs for the Commons have received Stanford Board of Trustees approval, moving the project closer to construction. The project now has the second of three key approvals. Core structures will be the repurposed bookstore and post office buildings, plus the new Student Barn.

Construction is expected to begin in summer 2027, with completion by early 2030.

Interim improvements and programming are enhancing event and social opportunities for students. The Commons at Campus Center is moving closer to reality following Stanford Board of Trustees approval this month of detailed designs for the project, which will transform the central campus with new gathering spaces and reimagined buildings.

“The board’s approval moves us another exciting, meaningful step closer to realizing the long-held vision for an even more vibrant heart of campus,” said Provost Jenny Martinez.
