Construction delay extends Green, Pink Line disruptions

CHICAGO (WGN) — A construction project is running behind schedule, impacting Green and Pink Line riders as commuters navigate additional disruptions this weekend.

If you commute through downtown Chicago, expect two more days of train service disruptions.

The Chicago Department of Transportation has extended construction on the Lake Street Bridge, with work now set to wrap up by 4 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28.

While the bridge has been closed to cars and pedestrians since 2025, this latest phase of construction has prevented trains from crossing it since Oct. 13.

Service was originally set to resume Monday, Oct. 26. The delay will continue to affect CTA riders in two ways.

On the Green Line, the route is temporarily split in the Loop. Trains run from Harlem to Clinton, then resume from Clark and Lake toward the South Side. To get between those two stops, riders will need to take a free shuttle bus.

Over on the Pink Line, trains are currently not entering the Loop. Instead, riders will need to exit at the Racine stop and transfer to the Blue Line to get into and out of downtown.

The CTA says crews encountered unexpected alignment issues between newer and older parts of the bridge and thanked riders for their patience.

WGN-TV caught up with riders using the Green Line to see how they felt about the split service.

"It's like 20 minutes, that's too long for me. I work five minutes from here, but it's convenient though because they let me ride free," one rider said.

"It's a little stressful because I have somewhere to go," Jaida Newell said.

The delay comes as riders navigate other CTA disruptions this weekend. Elevated Loop stations are also closed, impacting Brown, Green, Orange and Pink Line riders. The CTA says the work is needed about every ten years to help maintain safe and reliable service and reduce the risk of future disruptions.

"My plan was to get on the bus or the train, whichever one, and go to Midway Airport so I could go home, but now I'm having to convert to a shuttle," tourist Angela Gray said. "With this being my first time ever riding public transportation in Chicago, it's very confusing."

The stations are expected to reopen in time for Monday morning commuters.
