A federal judge has temporarily halted the Trump administration from expanding the border wall and other security infrastructure in the Big Bend region of west Texas, dealing a significant blow to their efforts. This decision comes after a hearing on a lawsuit filed by environmental groups and local advocates who challenged several Department of Homeland Security (DHS) waivers that suspended various environmental and historical protection laws.
Judge Kathleen Cardone ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, stating that they were likely to succeed in their case and would suffer irreparable harm if construction proceeded. The ruling bars U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) from border security infrastructure construction or ground disturbance unless they comply with suspended federal laws.
"This is a historic victory for Big Bend and everyone who loves this wild corner of Texas," said Laiken Jordahl, a public lands advocate.
