KDOT Provides Update on Highway 83 Construction Progress
The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) shared updates on Monday regarding the ongoing major reconstruction project on U.S. Highway 83. The project, spanning approximately 2.5 miles from the Haskell/Finney County line to the Arkansas River in Garden City, involves:
- Replacing and rerouting the highway to create a two-lane expressway with passing lanes.
- Safety improvements through the consolidation of highway access points, improved intersection angles, and the addition of turn lanes and lighting.
These changes are being made to prepare U.S. 83 for potential future expansion to a four-lane highway. The current phase is expected to be completed in October 2027.

It's worth noting that this highway realignment is part of a larger effort. Since 2023, crews have been working on another significant project: the expansion and realignment of I-70 in northeast Kansas.
