Las Vegas Students Build Real-World Skills as Construction Demand Climbs

Students in the construction program at Southeast Career Technical Academy (SECTA) use power tools, measuring tapes, and safety checklists on a daily basis, and their class often resembles a real job site. The hands-on approach comes as the Las Vegas Valley faces a growing need for skilled workers.

Senior Summer Abel emphasizes the program's unique structure: students take on defined roles, much like a crew on a real job. “Our teacher's goal for this club is it's supposed to simulate the job site, so we'll have the boss and the workers and the safety person all making sure we're doing everything right,” Abel said.

Abel believes the field experience she's gaining will give her a head start after graduation. Students also rotate through several trades, including plumbing, metal framing, and carpentry, offering a wide range of career options within the construction field.

Construction teacher Lucas Inman emphasizes proper procedures and safe work practices, aiming for projects that "will hopefully last... 100 years instead of 20."

Nigro Construction, a Las Vegas-based contractor, has played a significant role in enhancing the program by donating nearly 2,000 tools. This allows students to spend more time with tools in hand, gaining longer periods of practical experience.

Kaela Coons from Nigro Construction highlights the growing urgency of preparing future workers as Southern Nevada's development pipeline reaches $33 billion in 2026.

SECTA is currently accepting applications for the program. Interested students can apply at applyccsd.schoolmint.com/login.
