While a long-in-the-works data center made its debut last month in Kuna, construction work at the site is not yet finished.

Meta held a grand opening for its Kuna data center at the beginning of September. The company broke ground on the structure in 2022. Now, additional facilities are expanding the tech giant’s footprint at the site.

Meta is building two "rapid deployment structures" to increase capacity at the site.

Meta Director of Global Development Brad Davis told BoiseDev that the facilities have an aluminum substructure covered with a weather-resistant fabric. The ends resemble a stemless spade, and the structures appear to be a couple hundred feet long.

The company has stood up the buildings at some of its data centers, including one in New Albany, Ohio, as Fast Company reported.

Meeting demand for ‘unforeseen capacity’

Davis called the structures a new tool that allows the company to quickly meet demand for “unforeseen capacity needs” and demand spikes.

It takes about 8 months to set up one of the structures. Davis estimated that both structures will be finished by the end of the year.

“We can move a lot faster with something like this,” Davis said. “I think as we plan out a larger campus, it’s one of those things where you wouldn’t plan it from day one, but it’s a super helpful tool to allow us to address capacity needs over time.”

Davis said the two structures contribute a small additional percentage of capacity to the campus; he declined to disclose exact percentages.
