Salt Lake City International Airport Celebrates Completion of Construction
Salt Lake City International Airport marked the end of a 12-year, $5.1 billion renovation project on Saturday night. The final piece of Concourse B, featuring new gates and local restaurants, was the highlight.
Mayor Erin Mendenhall praised the project, funded by federal grants and user fees, not local tax dollars.
"I couldn't be more proud of this incredible accomplishment," said Mendenhall.
The project began in July 2014 and evolved over the years, with new restaurants like Swig and Moochie's Cheesesteaks and seven new gates for United Airlines.
During the celebration, the airport unveiled a new art installation, "Crossroads to the World", made of laser-cut acrylic airplanes, and musician Kurt Bestor performed a specially-composed song.
While some travelers have complained about the long walk to the final piece of Concourse B, officials noted it's crucial for preparing for the Salt Lake Temple open house next year and 2034 Winter Olympics.
The official ribbon cutting for the new Concourse B will take place on Tuesday morning.
