At a chilly morning press conference today, Seattle Social Housing Developer (SSHD) Interim CEO Tiffani McCoy announced plans for the agency’s first original construction project, a five-story apartment building in the Central District on the lot that used to belong to the late housing advocate Rep. Frank Chopp. Scheduled to open in 2028, the development will provide 20 units of housing, leased at a mix of affordable and market rate rents.
The Central District site is SSHD’s second official housing project, following the May acquisition of a property in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.

Details and Timeline
The building will feature a mix of one-bedroom and two-bedroom units, designed to cater to the needs of a diverse range of residents. SSHD plans to begin construction in early 2027, with completion expected by the end of 2028.
This project marks a significant step forward in SSHD’s mission to address Seattle’s housing crisis, especially in light of the agency’s recent funding boost. The expansion plans were increased by 70 percent, thanks to a combination of public grants and private investments.
Quotable
“We are thrilled to announce this project, which is a testament to our commitment to providing affordable housing options in Seattle,” said McCoy. “With the support of our partners and investors, we are able to scale up our efforts and make a tangible impact on the city’s housing landscape.”
