Federal agents raid Santa Fe construction site, make arrests
Federal immigration agents raided a housing construction site in Santa Fe on Tuesday morning, detaining several individuals, according to builders. This incident is part of a reported series of visits by agents to construction sites and other locations across the city for immigration enforcement.
"I spoke to a couple other builders. They’ve gone to quite a few construction sites in the city," said Vincent Pizzonia, founder and owner of Twilight Homes, confirming the raid at his company's Los Brios site off Agua Fría Street.
A social media video captured men being led away in handcuffs by agents marked with "ICE" and "ERO." Pizzonia was unsure if the individuals were his contractors or those from another company at the development.
"It’s not just us," he noted, "all the building sites in Los Lunas, Rio Rancho, Albuquerque — and now Santa Fe."
National trend of immigration arrests
The recent arrests of immigrants have reached historic highs nationwide. According to Department of Homeland Security data, arrest totals from July and August set all-time records, with data from September yet to be released.
The increased raids and arrests are taking a toll on construction workers, their families, and the housing market in some of New Mexico's largest cities.
