Silvis Roundhouse Project Reaches Major Construction Milestone

SILVIS, Ill. (KWQC) - Crews in Silvis have begun pouring concrete in the city’s project to restore a historic railroad landmark.

Last year, the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America announced plans to reconstruct and install the 135-foot Cicero Turntable from the BNSF Railway in Silvis.

The outer ring of the turntable is beginning to take shape, which officials say is a critical structure component for further development. The roundhouse constructed over the site will fully operate for locomotive restoration and house a live museum for visitors to commemorate one of the oldest and largest railroad monuments in North America.

On Monday, RRHMA officials also announced that $398,000 has been raised for the project, nearly tripling fundraising amounts from their last announcement in August. Crews are working daily to prepare the site for future development, the organization said in its announcement.
