SPIC starts construction of Unit 5 of its Haiyang nuclear power plant in China - Enerdata

State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) Starts Construction of Nuclear Power Plant Unit 5

SPIC has initiated the construction of unit 5 of the Haiyang nuclear power plant located in Shandong province, China (World Nuclear News, 02/11/2026). The pouring of the first concrete for this unit marks the commencement of the final development stage of the nuclear power plant.

  • The nuclear site is designed for six units in three phases: Phase I (two AP1000 units, operational since 2018 and 2019); phase II (two CAP1000 units, under construction since 2022 and 2025, both set to be fully operational in 2027); and phase III (CAP1000 reactors for unit 5 and 6).

SPIC has contracted China Nuclear Industry 24 Construction (CNNC 24) for the civil construction of the Phase III nuclear islands. Upon completion, all units combined are anticipated to produce 60.9 TWh/year, sufficient to meet the energy needs of 54 million people, while avoiding the emission of approximately 50 MtCO2/year.

China aims to achieve 200 GW of nuclear capacity by 2035.
