Construction employment increased in 180 (or 50% out of 360) metro areas between September 2025 and September 2026, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of new government employment data. However, it declined in areas including Gainesville, New Brunswick, N.J.; and Fairbanks, Alaska; and Atlanta, which led the country with a -5,100 jobs (or 5% decline) drop.
Gainesville also experienced a significant loss with -400 jobs (or 7% decline).
What’s driving these increases? Data centers and large power and manufacturing facilities are often built in areas where construction jobs increase, according to Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist.
