Trump's border wall construction blocked in Big Bend National Park
By Pedro Oliveira Jr.
A federal judge issued a ruling on Friday against the Trump administration's plan to construct a border wall in the Big Bend National Park region of Texas.
In a brief order, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone barred the federal government from "construction or ground disturbing activities" in the national park.
The Department of Homeland Security had been rapidly expanding the southwestern section of the border wall. Construction in the Big Bend National Park area was paused in August due to local pushback.
Challengers argued that the administration had overstepped its authority and requested the court to halt construction due to potential environmental and recreational impacts.
"Once bulldozers clear vegetation, roads are cut into previously undeveloped terrain, lights mounted, and steel barrier infrastructure is effected, those qualities cannot be restored through monetary compensation or after-the-fact relief," attorneys wrote in court papers challenging the construction.
