UW starts construction on $231.1M chemistry hub set to open in 2029
By Lisa Stiffler | Sep 30, 2026
The University of Washington (UW) today marked the groundbreaking of its Chemical Sciences Building, a $231.1 million facility that will provide new laboratories for instruction and research in areas including sustainable chemistry, human health, advanced materials, and quantum science.
The five-story, 104,500-square-foot building will replace the existing Chemistry Library Building, located west of Bagley Hall. The new facility will also allow for a complete renovation of Bagley Hall, which has served as the home of the Department of Chemistry since 1937.
Funding for construction comes from a $129 million appropriation from Washington state, with the remaining balance provided by the UW's College of Arts & Sciences, private donations, and the university itself. Funding for Bagley Hall's renovation is still in progress.
The new building is scheduled to open its doors in 2029.
"The work that happens here will help advance science, strengthen our state, and improve lives for generations to come," said UW President Robert Jones.
