In May 1990, what was to become the Dominion Tower was merely a blueprint. But with a balloon launch instead of a traditional groundbreaking, anticipation was high.
"In Roanoke, Virginia, anything that’s 20 stories high, we call a skyscraper," shared Mayor Noel Taylor.
Developer Henry Faison focused on the financial benefits, stating, "You get a major investment and I think what that investment does is help the tax base of the city."
Construction and Documentation
Construction commenced, and so did WDBJ7 photographer Dennis Brown's mission to capture its progress. He found inspiration in nearby references like a white sign and a smokestack, ensuring his shots aligned perfectly.
Brown's photo essay and time-lapse video chronicled the tower's rise, from foundation to completion.
A Grand Opening
In November 1991, the public had their turn to admire the view. People gathered on the 21 st floor (officially the 20 th for superstition) to take in the breathtaking panorama of the Roanoke Valley.
"To me it’s wonderful," expressed Pauline Amos. "It's beautiful scenery no kidding."
A Lasting Legacy
Despite regional banking name changes and new additions to the skyline, including the Taubman Museum of Art, the Dominion Tower stands as a staple in Roanoke's downtown business district, marking 35 years since its construction.
